Aaaaaaaah!

Steve Oram's extraordinary film stands up to repeat viewing extremely well and, if you're watching carefully, will probably last some time before you feel you've stopped finding new things in it. The cast interviews that come with the film (recorded using words, which is almost disappointing) provide a lot of context, and whilst an initial viewing of the film is more fun without this, it offers different was of looking at it afterwards. The actors assure us that the original script they saw was in English and had some really witty dialogue; it becomes an intriguing mystery. They talk at length, but always entertainingly, about the process of developing their vocalisations, getting into character, rehearsing and developing chemistry with one another. There are some great stories along the way and this section is a particular treat for fans of their wider work.

The film's other supporting features give us the chance to enjoy in full two television programmes watched by characters during the film, neither of which disappoints. Pub is the cruder but perfectly captures the language of the sitcom, overdoing it just enough to maximise the viciousness of the satire without quite becoming crossing the line into unbearable annoyance. If you don't watch sitcoms, you might want to catch an episode or two as a refresher in order to fully appreciate its delights. The cookery programme, meanwhile, offers more Romero-esque pathos but keeps the laughs coming. It may encourage you to try something new in the kitchen yourself, but I recommend following Toyah Wilcox's advice and not actually relieving yourself on the kitchen floor whilst preparing a meal. I also recommend refraining from eating whilst you watch this DVD, as you may very well choke.
