Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film For Theatres

Read Anton Bitel's film review of Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film For TheatresThis two-disc edition is probably everything a fan could want. I say "probably", as only disc one was made available for review, with most of the many extras crammed onto disc two, including a feature-length film made entirely from deleted scenes with redubbed voice-overs, and a copy of the first ever episode made for the television series (a Christmas special confusingly entitled Deleted Scenes).
As desultory, sarcastic and meandering as the feature itself, the full audio commentary is downright hilarious. Dana Snyder (voice of Master Shake) and Fred Armisen (voice of Time Lincoln) are joined by committed fans Todd Hanson (editor of The Onion) and Patti Smith (yes, the Patti Smith!), and eventually also by Patti Smith's son Jackson.
Patti Smith gets nostalgic about South Jersey and linoleum, and tries to demonstrate that the entire film is in fact constructed around aspects of her own biography ("whoever created this show was really obsessed with me, and maybe I have a chance of getting a husband"). Armisen is at pains to highlight "one of the only points in the movie that actually makes sense", as well as the film's standard of animation ("it makes everyone painfully aware what amateurs they are at Pixar and Disney").
The two Smiths improvise a theme song for the lost character Napkin Lad – and we also learn new facts about Rush drummer Neil Peart ("A lot of people don't know, he's actually only three inches tall"). You might wonder why so few of the personnel on this commentary have anything to do with the movie (and the personnel themselves ask the same question explicitly), but who cares when it is this entertaining?
