Eye For Film >> Movies >> Audition (1999) DVD Review
The picture quality of the film is poor. It has the look of blown-up video footage.
However, the Interview With Miike Takashi is clear. As the main extras feature, it appears minimalist. Takashi sits at a table with a half filled glass of water upon it and bare red brick wall behind. He wears a green sweat shirt and designer shades. Smiling is obviously difficult for him. His black hair has been shaved close to a bullet-shaped skull. He's spooky to look at. He answers questions seriously and yet, in some clever way, avoids them. You come away knowing little more about his attitude towards sadism in the cinema than what you imagined at the start. His presence is cold. No jokes. He says the film didn't do well in Japan, "and that's a pity", without discovering why. It gained its reputation on the film festival circuit.
The Trailer is artistic and well-designed, the Gallery is a series of poster ads and filmographies are what you would expect, a few lines on the careers of cast and crew.
Chris Campion's Film Notes is a movie review. Who's Chris Campion?
The Extreme Asia Trailer Reel offers trailers for Ring, Ring 2, Nowhere To Hide and Hard Boiled.
It would be true to say that the extras package is a disappointment.
