Second Sight’s six-disc box set presents Berlin Alexanderplatz in a newly restored version, overseen by the series’ original editors. While not quite reference quality owing to the age and condition of the materials they were working with, there seems little doubt that this colour corrected edition is about as good and faithful to the original vision as we are ever likely to get, as demonstrated by the before and after comparisons included amongst the impressive extras package on the sixth disc of the set.

Pride of place here however goes to the making of and retrospective documentaries on the series, together painting a fascinating picture of a genius at the height of his powers, the making of a masterpiece and its enduring legacy.
