Read Keith Hennessey Brown's film review of Black Sun The Nanking MassacreThe tensions implicit in the film are also evidenced in the packaging for Tartan's Region 0 PAL DVD, tellingly released under their Grindhouse imprint, which emphasises that it is “for mature viewers only” in a way that seems a touch unnecessary given its 18 certificate and comes across as exploitation-film ballyhoo when coupled with the quotes from horrorchannel.com - “a vile film” and “the best looking exploitation film I have ever seen”.
While I wouldn't go that far, the film – and Tartan's 1.77:1 anamorphic transfer – are perfectly adequate when one considers its origins. Sound and subtitles are also satisfactory.
