Read Jennie Kermode's film review of Brotherhood Of The WolfIt's not often that a home entertainment package takes a review up a whole star, but there are so many great extras to explore here - not to mention a gorgeous looking 4K version of the film - that you'll enjoy a considerably richer experience, and hours of fun.
Spread over three discs, which include the original theatrical cut of the film alongside that UHD version, this package also includes an hour long interview with director Christophe Gans, who goes into great detail about how the film developed, explaining many of its idiosyncrasies. There's a further 17 minute interview with him as well, conducted over a gorgeous looking meal of which he gets to eat little, though as there's quite a bit of background noise in this one, you'll be glad of the subtitles. There's a lengthy introduction to the legend of the Beast of Gévaudan - essential for a proper appreciation of the film - and a look at how Gans' version of it was created.
Unlike the usual approach to deleted scenes, just throwing them it to bulk out such a release, this package supplies an introduction for each one, addressing the role which it originally served in the story, how it was filmed and why it was excised. There's some additional martial arts action and some further character development for Mani here. Accompanying these are a series of bite-sized featurettes which explore different technical aspects of the film, from the make-up effects to the creation of the drawings we see featured in it, and the young Émilie Dequenne's approach to getting into character.
With other odds and ends including three different trailers, this is a real treat for fans and an eye-opener for those new to the film.
