Community

The plus side of watching Community on DVD is that it doesn't really lose anything on the small screen. In many ways its themes make it better suited to home viewing, inviting a sense of claustrophobia and intrusion of horror into the everyday.

Alongside the film, there's the trailer, which is much better edited and shows how more could have been made out of the raw material, albeit in a much shorter film. There's also a making-of documentary. This takes observational filmmaking to the limit, often just presenting us with excerpts from crew meetings caught on a static camera with poor quality sound. It still has its moments. Star Elliot Jordan is much more fun here than in the film itself, and there are nice moments with the child stars talking about their roles, plus we get to spend a bit of time with a make-up artist discussing technique. That said, there's really not a lot else. It will leave you with an impression of how tough filmmaking can be at the very bottom end of the budget scale but it won't do much to entertain you in the process.
