Read Amber Wilkinson's film review of Edward And CarolineAs with all the current Becker classic titles being released on DVD and Blu-ray (including Casque d'Or, Touchez Pas Au Grisbi and Le Trou), this comes with an interview from Becker expert Ginette Vincendeau. She sets the scene for the film, offering biographical detail about Becker's childhood and his experience of the same social class and snobbishness of that depicted by Uncle Claude and his coterie.
Au Cinema Du Soir is a French programme from 1974, which was originally shown around a screening of the film. It features an introduction to Edward And Caroline plus a question and answer session afterwards, including input from Daniel Gélin (Edward), Anne Vernon (Caroline) and screenwriter Annette Wademant. Vernon talks about filming at "top speed" - an unusual restriction from Becker, who liked to take his time. Wademant, meanwhile, dismisses the idea that he was taking a swipe at the upper class, suggesting he simply "wanted to have fun and enjoy his characters".
Le Jazz Et Le Jeunesse is a short interview segment with Jacques Becker talking about the incorporation of jazz music into his film.
As with all the subtitling on this collection, the nuance is excellent, including phrases such as "wardrobe malfunction" which help the film to feel fresh.
A fine set of extras that offer a modern day framing as well as historical insight into the film.
