Eye For Film >> Movies >> Eros (2004) DVD Review
Where the recent trend has been for Hollywood blockbusters to be released on 'special edition' dvds with two or even three discs of lavish extras, the reverse is true for more independent, small-scale films, which are increasingly being released with few or no accompaniments.
Artificial Eye's edition of Eros is a case in point. No complaints about the film itself, which comes looking great, in its original aspect ratio, and sounding great, with an option of stereo or surround sound (both Dolby digital), as well as (removable) English subtitles. That, however, is pretty much it, apart from the original theatrical trailer and a comprehensive text biography for each of the film's three directors (including a charmingly misprinted reference to Antonioni's "The Passanger" [sic]).
There are no commentaries, no interviews with either cast or crew and no background information on the film's collaborative genesis. None of which, of course, diminishes the impact of the film itself - but it is disappointing for those homeviewers who might want a little something extra…
