For a work that demands so much from its sound and cinematography, the DVD transfer is thankfully faithful to the film. The bleached sepia hues come out well and the silences are crisp, allowing every background detail on the soundtrack to come through. The only disappointment is that it's a letterboxed rather than anamorphic version, meaning that some of the detail in the landscapes is lost. However the subtitling, so often a problem with foreign DVD transfers, is very good, and easy to read.

The extras are in keeping with the minimalism of the film: a couple of filmographies for star Koji Yakusho and director Shinji Aoyoma, and some words from the director where he discusses his influences, the themes, and a little bit about working on the movie. These are all rather difficult to read on the screen, and it's a shame that more location shots weren't provided. Nevertheless, it's the film you'll be captivated by in the end.
