Foxcatcher

There are minimal extras on the Entertainment One Blu-ray release of Bennett Miller's film - but what is included is well worth a look.

Aside from the usual upcoming film trailer reel, there are five minutes of deleted scenes, three in all and all of which are striking in their own way. It's notably impressive how quickly Miller sets a mood.

The other, and best, piece of additional material is the 16-minute The Story Of Foxcatcher. Rather than being a straight forward look at the fact behind the fiction, this is a mixture of Bennett talking about the origins of the film and the cast and crew talking about bringing it to life. It's a serious and respectful addition, that pays due heed to the fact that real people lie behind the characters. It's particularly interesting to hear from David Schultz's widow Nancy about her involvement with the film.

A large chunk of the population will be able to sympathise when Miller says "I didn't want to be rejected by Mark Ruffalo", and it's interesting to learn the actor rejected the role of Perry Smith in Capote three times (a role that later went to Clifton Collins Jr).

Much more thoughtful than the usual lip-service love-ins, it seems as though Miller's meditative approach to filmmaking extends to his movie's extras.
