Get Rich Or Die Tryin'

Read Tim Bryant's film review of Get Rich Or Die Tryin'The DVD comes with one genuine extra, a short Making Of documentary, called A Portrait Of An Artist. It would be better entitled, A Portrait Of Two Artists, as it highlights the unlikely working rapport between the very Irish Jim Sheridan and New York's 50 Cent.
It is a hastily put together companion piece to the film, with Sheridan explaining the career trajectory of Cutis Jackson, his mentoring by Run DMC's Jam Master Jay and early promise that ended in his shooting, after which he was dropped by his record label. Later, he was picked up by Dre Dre and Eminem's label in exchange for the street cred he would confer on them, leading to 50 Cent's first album selling an unbelievable 12 million copies. This is all fascinating stuff for the hip-hop fan and more of it would have been appreciated.
The remaining outtakes are quite interesting, especially Sheridan playing dice on a basketball court, or his outburst of temper at Fiddy. The piece is fairly short and tries to capture its star's strength and persona. Like the film, however, it does a fairly superficial job.
NOTE: 50 Cent shows a far greater range of expression here than he does in the film.
