Eye For Film >> Movies >> I Saw The Devil (2010) DVD Review
Korean director Jee-woon Kim’s crushingly violent and provocatively charged exploration of the dark side of human morality, I Saw The Devil, arrives on DVD with a pretty basic selection of extra features. Amongst the usual TV spots and trailers is an interview reel featuring the director and several of the film’s stars.
Clocking in at just under 20 minutes, the interviews are a series of crudely edited talking heads with no title cards or text to tell us who the interviewees actually are. The bulk of the running time comprises director Jee-woon Kim, who discusses the actors and their performances, and how he developed the characters. Interestingly, he also discusses the revenge-drama genre and how I Saw The Devil fits into it. A number of actors feature in shorter interviews discussing their characters, how they got involved with the film and how they approached the material.
The ‘making of’ is a 20-minute montage of behind the scenes footage. It depicts how several of the film’s key scenes were shot and choreographed, and reveals the scale of the production, particularly in the scenes showing the search for the body.
There is no input from any of the filmmakers in this segment, just detached, narration-free footage of the shooting process.
Casual viewers will get more out of these features than hardcore fans.
