Behind the Scenes of Imaginary Heroes
A concise but thorough discussion of the main themes of the film, with input from the three leading actors, this is entertaining in itself and conveys effectively the director's excitement in shooting his debut movie. It's not especially insightful, but is warm-hearted and will please fans of the film.
Behind the Scenes Photo Gallery
A selection of nice press-quality photos, worth looking through once, but with little else to offer. Considering that the commentary reveals the existence of photos, which sound rather more entertaining, it's disappointing not to see them here.
Sigourney Weaver Commentary
More substantial than many solo commentaries, this covers the themes of the film as well as Weaver's approach to performing the role of the mother. Her enthusiasm really comes across, though at times it becomes repetitive and verges on the sycophantic. The degree of personal input, which she had in the film, enables her to go into depth about the development of her character.
Emile Hirsch and Dan Harris Commentary
The banter between director and star, who clearly loved working together, creates a commentary track which is outstanding and as watchable as the film in its own right. There's rarely a quiet moment on this track. In the course of their effervescent dialogue, a whole stream of information about the film and their experience of making it emerges, complete with analysis of all the other major characters as well as a more intensive focus on Hirsch's role, as the troubled adolescent second son.
