Read Caro Ness's film review of Jeff Dunham: Spark of InsanityThe extras include a short showing how Dunham makes his puppets, with the creation of Melvin, which is fascinating. An additional short features Walter standing for president, which is truly funny, and the other asks Dunham’s fans what they would put on a stick.
The piece about Melvin is particularly absorbing because it talks through the process of making the puppet step by step, showing how the fibre glass head is made, and that the mouth is the first to be cut out, and the eyes the last feature to be added. We also learn how much fine filling, sanding and painting is needed to make the skin to look realistic, particularly with the advent of HDTV, where the cameras pick up the slightest blemish. We then see how he makes the stick that operates, in Melvin's case, his eyebrows - which move independently - and his mouth.
