Jimmy Carr Live Collection

Read Keith Dudhnath's film review of Jimmy Carr Live CollectionThe picture and sound quality are perfect. While this isn't hugely important for a stand up DVD, it makes a nice change from some stand up shows that look as though they were shot on a cheap camcorder. Subtitling is all present and correct.
The extras are marvellous. This is how all DVD packages should be. The Royal Variety Performance and Comedy Central Special are extra shows. While there is some crossover with the main shows, they are still well worth watching.
Comedy Idol is an hour-long hunt for an opening act. The procession of terribly bad acts is hilarious, but I was left wishing for longer looks at the best comedians. Even just an extra 10 minutes overall would give a better feel for the competition.
Karaoke comedy is rather pointless. It's one scene, with subtitles. Why you couldn't watch that scene with regular subtitles is beyond me. The subtitles in Cockney, Yorkshire and Scottish are a silly little throwaway joke, but they raise a smile.
The commentary from Jimmy Carr and fellow comedian and DJ Iain Morris is somewhat disappointing. There isn't anything for them to comment on, as it's just a stand up show, so it lacks focus and moves slowly. Highlights of their XFM radio show are much better and show that with a bit of thought and some sort of framework, the commentary could have been much more worthwhile.
The Top Gear interview and backstage clips are of a credible quality. Neither is a must-watch, but both will happily pass a few minutes.
Both DVDs are packed to the rafters with extras that will keep you entertained. Leaving aside the disappointing commentary, it's about as good as you're ever likely to get.
