Eye For Film >> Movies >> Jindabyne (2006) DVD Review
The Making Of is the most significant of the extras on the disc and is of a much higher standard than most. It takes the process of making Jindabyne through from the pre-production through the shoot and intot hte editing phase. All the main players are interviewed, inclulding the director Ray Lawrence - revealing that if he manages to get 30 per cent of what he aims for, he's a happy man - and stars Gabriel Byrne and Laura Linney.
Thankfully, all those who feature talk about the making of the film itself, rather than the usual sticky gush-fests in which everyone slaps one another on the back. The comments about Lawrence's directorial style - his use of natural light, his quick working technique - are particularly interesting.
There are three deleted scenes, one a scene of exposition between the men on their fishing trip, which was presumably cut so that their motives for staying rather than going retain more ambiguity, a second between little Caylin-Calandria and her Granddad, which doesn't seem to quite work and a third between Gabriel Byrne and Laura Linney. It's just a shame there is no director's commentary with these scenes to explain Lawrence's thoughts behind their ommission.
The trailer completes a solid package, which would be worth buying for the film alone.
