It was perhaps rather unfortunate that I came to listen to the commentary track for Michael Clayton less than 24 hours after reviewing the one for Seachd: The Inaccessible Pinnacle, since it has been cut from an entirely different piece of cloth to that engaging, informative ride.

Where Seachd’s commentary is filled with anecdote that really adds to the experience of the move, that given by Michael Clayton director Tony Gilroy and his editor brother John is notable only for its length. In fairness, between the platitudes and luvvie references to the “grooved up crew” and the “big kudos” which needs to go to people - most notably George Clooney, who Tony really, really, really loves – there is some technical information of note. But for every snippet about the way the film was shot, there is a bucket of gush to be endured.

The three deleted scenes, with commentary, are more engaging, particularly one which features a relationship for Michael with Jennifer Ehle, which was sadly destined for the cutting-room floor. Sound, picture and subtitles are all fine – although the commentary is not given the subtitle treatment (for which, the deaf should be grateful). The package is rounded out with trailers, although it is a shame they didn’t take a look at editing these for the UK release, since they include a teaser for Jumper that proudly proclaims it will be out “next year”. All told, a bit of a disappointment, considering the quality of the film.
