Miss Potter

The picture and sound are all you could wish for from such a recent film release, the subtitles are accurate and clear – although, sadly, no present on the making of extra - and there is an excellent audio description for the visually impaired.

However, the disc is distinctly light on extras, featuring only the making of, a Katie Melua music video and a trailer.

The making of features all the expected people, the director, Zellweger – curiously whispery, Ewan McGregor – complete with dodgy moustache, and much of the rest of the cast, plus costume designer Anthony Powell. At 33 minutes it is more engaging than the usual gush fests, as the actors talk about how they view the real Beatrix and her life, but you can’t help feeling there was an opportunity missed to include some sort of short documentary about Potter and her work. Equally, the addition of an academic or two, to talk about her books would have lent it a little more weight. Even a gallery of her water colour images would have been a nice addition.

As it is, you’ll have to make do with a Katie Melua video, which is fine if you like that sort of thing.
