This 4K restoration of Joseph Losey's classic is a thing of beauty, particularly as the director employs colour so deftly through the film to suggest mood and character - not just in Alain Delon's range of finely cut suits and decadent dressing gowns but also in the cool mint green dinner outfit of Jeanne Moreau's Florence, cloaked in red when she becomes 'a scarlet woman' in the darkness and in the shadowy blacks of the gendarmes capes as they plan a Paris round-up.

Beyond the look, the film also comes with a strong set of extras. The introduction from academic and documentarian Jean-Baptiste Thoret is thorough without being exhaustive. He sets the film in both a historical context and within Losey's cannon without spoiling what is to come.

Mr Klein Revisited by Michel Ciment is also an excellent addition to this DVD. The French critic picks up the job where Thoret left off, considering the film in the wider context of Losey's back catalogue and French cinema at the time. While you might quibble with one or two of his observations about what made Losey tick - something that can only be speculated - if you're looking for a detailed assessment of the film's themes and the director's way of working then you have come to the right place.

The extras are rounded out by a sweet, first-person account of the shooting from one of the film's editor's Henri Lanoë, which is so bang up to date he even references the pandemic. He gives a further sense of the director's style and technique - including the way that he was happy with a single take got to Alain Delon at one point. Somehow Losey's mastery of cinematic language and his careful placement of detail - a cabaret boot here, a familiar face in the crowd there - seems all the more remarkable given the speed at which he worked.

All in all a top package from Studiocanal that's well worth adding to your collection.
