One of the strongest independent horror films for years, with things to say that go way beyond the usual limits of the genre, Nina Forever is a welcome arrival on DVD. Those who enjoy it will want to see it many times. Some viewers will find it romantic, some cathartic, some darkly funny; others will find it a useful means of starting difficult conversations; whichever is the case for you, it's always pleasing to watch something this intelligent.

The package of extras that goes with the film makes it even better. Though the first featurette most goes over things you will already know if you've watched the film, without much in-depth background, the second is fascinating, not just supplying deleted scenes but looking at how they developed and why they were discarded. The Blaine brothers talk us through them, also explaining why they wanted fans to see them even if they didn't fit in the film, and there's a lot of very strong material here. In particular, the character of Rob is more fleshed ut, and we get to see what Cian Barry is capable of as an actor. A scene where he is back behind the wheel of a car for the first time since his motorbike accident also shows us the Blaines at their most impressive, and it will have you on the edge of your seat even in this isolated form.

The final feature is a montage of scenes showing how digital effects were constructed, stunts organised and colours altered to give the film its distinctive look. There's no commentary here but none is really needed. Although it goes on a little too long and risks becoming repetitive, it's an interesting addition to a great collection of materials.
