Eye For Film >> Movies >> Nymphomaniac (2013) DVD Review
Drawing as it does on the tropes of pornography, Nymphomaniac really benefits from being seen on the small screen. It may lose some of the power to shock and to make people squirm that public screenings give it, but the greater intimacy of home viewing makes for a more intense experience. It also means that it can be watched in small sections, allowing more time for contemplation, and this is certainly a film that you'll want to watch multiple times.
In addition to the film, the extras here are very strong. They may be simple - just a series of interviews and a group Q&A - but they contain fascinating insights and really add depth to the viewing experience. Stellan Skarsgård, in particular, has intriguing points to make about both the film and his lengthy working relationship with Lars Von Trier. Stacy Martin exhibits a beguiling awkwardness and it's clear how her naivety, and Shia LaBeouf's, contributed something to their characters, giving them an added rawness and humanity.
All that's really missing here is an interview with Von Trier himself, who remains in the shadows, talked about in glowing (and sometimes teasing) terms but essentially still a mystery. Nevertheless, it's a great package which no fan of his work should be without.
