Read David Graham's film review of Obsession

The film is awash with soft focus that makes the Blu Ray image a little self-defeating at times, but during the many scenes with natural lighting the quality of the picture is quite striking, highlighting the gorgeous widescreen cinematography, while the lavish soundtrack is also effectively showcased by an immersive sound mix.

The extras on the disc are a little less substantial than most Arrow releases, but their usual superlative packaging standard is taken to new heights by the inclusion of a gorgeous bound copy of Paul Scrader's original script. This makes for compulsive reading, being considerably more daring than De Palma's final draft, continuing on from the film's ending to chronicle another bout of identity-conflicted madness. There's also the lovely-as-usual double-sided poster and informative booklet, as well as the multiple sleeves the DVD label so generously adorn their releases with.

A retrospective dating from 10 years ago manages to deepen the viewer's appreciation for the film and its director while giving insight into the many creative decisions that led to its eventual iteration. Rounding out the package are a trailer that ladles on the lurid mania in a way that may not represent the final film's tone but is at least an entertaining summary of its themes, and a couple of experimental shorts from the director's student days, as indulgent as may be expected but also thoroughly fascinating and worthwhile for fans. Woton's Wake gives insight into his concerns with the uncanny, while The Responsive Eye highlights his understanding of visual trickery. A lovingly crafted package that will tempt and delight newcomers and aficionados alike.
