Eye For Film >> Movies >> Poetry (2010) DVD Review
Poetry comes with a substantial set of extras - especially for a foreign language release. The 18-minute Making Of and nine-minute On Set With extras are essentially two halves of a whole, although the latter focuses on the director Lee Chang-dong and his leading lady Yun Jeong-hee. They are somewhat rough and ready but give a good feel for the dynamic on the set. Much is made of Yun's obvious "charisma" and Lee offers some insight into his casting and motivations. The interview with Ahn Nae-sang - who plays the father of one of Mija's grandon's friends - meanwhile, is brief at two minutes but worth a look.
Yun Jeong-hee is a short but sweet little extra, detailing her career - which, running at 330 films, at the present time - is certainly prolific and deserving of consideration.
The commentary track, sees film critic Kim Young-jin accompany Lee on a journey through the film. The end result is a little odd, dwelling on what often appear to be minor details but which clearly carry much more weight with a Korean audience. What certainly comes across is Lee's pursuit of perfection. Worth dipping in and out of, but you probably won't want to sit through it all in one session.
The disc is rounded out by the Korean and UK trailers.
