Apart from the theatrical trailer, there is a 'making of' featurette which, despite clocking in at a lengthy 40 minutes, does little more than illustrate the tedium between (and even during) takes on the average filmset.

Director/writer Kurosawa is seen setting up scenes, discussing character motivation with his cast, running through rehearsals and filming multiple takes - but really the only interest here is in the sections where he takes time out from the production to answer the interviewer's questions and talk about his craft.

Particularly refreshing and provocative is his idea that cinema, unlike other framed artforms, is as concerned with what is happening off-screen as on, and his suggestion that the absence of something can be as terrifying as its presence.

Also entertaining (but perhaps for the wrong reasons) is the bit where he declares to his disgruntled cinematographer: "Not to be rude, but I don't think it matters where the camera goes..." - although elsewhere he discusses (with brief illustrations from his earlier films) the important use of camera movement to anticipate what will happen and generate surprise and suspense.
