Eye For Film >> Movies >> Road Train (2010) DVD Review
At just 13 minutes, The Making Of Road Train may seem brief, but it wastes no time in cutting to the chase - much like the film it documents. The interviews here are more like soundbites, but still pack plenty of information. Georgina Haig (who plays Liz) discusses the improvisational approach to rehearsals. Director Dean Francis talks of the genuinely creepy abandoned locations in outback South Australia where settlers were "literally swallowed up by the land itself", and sings the praises of David 'Psycho' Argue for reminding everybody "that naturalism isn't necessarily the most interesting path" – especially in what he concedes is "not a totally serious film."
Francis also stresses his rejection of CGI or visual FX. "There's nothing", he argues, "more powerfully visceral than seeing cars actually get fucked up" – and there is a whole history of Ozploitation films to back him up there.
The five deleted scenes are all complete and of high quality, although it easy to see the economic reasons behind their removal.
