Robot Chicken Star Wars Episode II

Read Anton Bitel's film review of Robot Chicken Star Wars Episode IIThe original broadcast version of Robot Chicken Star Wars Episode II was 22 minutes in length – but this DVD also features the 38-minute extended edition, including all the material that had to be cut for the show to fit its allotted TV slot. That is a full 16 minutes of additional sketches that match the original in quality – and that explain why the Deleted Animatics extra has no content (apart from Seth Green declaring "Sorry to trick ya").
Show creators Green (loud) and Matt Senreich (quiet) are not just avid collectors, but also obsessive documenters, and so the 113 minutes of bite-sized, good-humoured extras on this disc chronicle every aspect of the show's production, as well as meetings with fans of Star Wars cosplay, a special screening at Lucas' studio-cum-ranch (attended by Lucas himself), alternate audio takes, trailers and promos, and a schizophrenic animation meeting in which Green acts out the movements of each and every character.
If that is not enough, there are also six (!) full audio commentaries on the extended version of Robot Chicken Star Wars Episode II (two with personnel from the voice-cast; one with the writers; two with the crew; and one with Frank Oz, the legendary animator and voice of Yoda – despite the fact that "he didn't have anything to do with the special"). Dominated by Green, these are more comic conversations than actual commentaries ("We don't have to work so hard to pad this out," he says, "we can just chat"), and so include impressions of Nicolas Cage and Meatwad (from Aqua Teen Hunger Force), group chants of "I Love Penis", and anecdotes about fart recordings and Japanese fully-armed Obama dolls. It is all very breezily entertaining – and for those who would prefer more detail on the show itself, the Chicken Nuggets extra offers sketch-by-sketch video commentary.
Last of all, there are two full 'bonus episodes' of Robot Chicken which, if anything, illustrate how much better the Star Wars material is.
