Read Angus Wolfe Murray's film review of Scrubs: Series 2There is only one word for this DVD package - cornucopia.
Essentially, it is a Making Of Behind The Scenes interview sesh, with Deleteds and Outtakes and Improv floor cuttings. There are titles, such as A Rare Condition (actors and crew talk about The Hospital - a real one that had been abandoned years before - which was used for everything, including J.D. and Turk's apartment, Dr Cox's apartment, a bar, a nightclub, as well as the doctor's work areas and patients rooms) and Johnny C Keeps Talking (McGinley describes the auditions - "I like being in a waiting room with people. Their terror calms me" - and the character of Dr Cox, which at first he considered too similar to Dr Kelso, head of the hospital - "he was a prick and who cared? I didn't want to play a prick for seven years" - and so persuaded Bill Lawrence, the creator of the show, that he should be "a hardass with a heart of gold" that you only glimpsed every now and again - "he should have a teaspoon of dirt and a pinch of sugar" - and he got it).
They cover the bases from the music, a vital ingredient and beautifully chosen, to stunts, which are never less than exciting. There's even a section, entitled J.D's Mojo, which is all about Zach Braff and sex, or rather how much J.D was getting and with which hot chicks. Somewhere else Lawrence talks about the fantasies, without which "I don't think we would have pulled it off." This goes into special effects territory, but most of all it's about imagination and having fun.
On six episodes, there are audio commentaries with Lawrence and six separate actors. They are anecdotal and chatty, but a tad disappointing. They feel, at times, like eavesdropping on someone else's three year old memories.
If there is a perfect DVD bonus selection, this is almost it. What helps are the individuals who contribute. They make you feel that Scrubs is a code name for Party.
