Eye For Film >> Movies >> Shine A Light (2008) DVD Review
Its doubtful that concert footage has ever looked or sounded more polished than it does on this DVD. The subtitles are all present and correct and a good audio descriptive track is also included... although the rather posh tones of the voice-over telling you "Mick and Keith smile broadly" has a slightly surreal edge given the down and dirty nature of their music.
In terms of extras, it's not a particularly extensive bunch. There are the obligatory bonus songs - of which Paint It Black is the best. Keith Richards' rendition of Little T&A is only notable in that it makes you realise why the Rolling Stones has a lead singer... and why it is not Richards.
The supplemental featurette is really just another chunk of archive footage mixed with rehearsal shots. It's entertaining and works well as a companion piece to the more concert-orientated main event. The Jumpin' Jack Flash multi-angle - which allows you to surf between five cameras - is the sort of thing it's fun to play with once but not much more than that.
All in all a perfectly acceptable set of extras, although it still feels as though more effort could have been taken. The film is also available as part of a two-disc edition - but the only real difference between the two is that the double disc contains a digital copy of the film, meaning you can port it more easily from place to place. Unless you're a massive Stones fan, this edition is probably comprehensive enough.
