Eye For Film >> Movies >> Step Brothers (2008) DVD Review
The picture quality is perfectly clear, as you'd expect from a recent film. The sound quality is fine too, but because it's heavy on the dialogue, some of the uses of rear speakers stick out like a sore thumb. Subtitling is all present and correct. There's also a descriptive audio soundtrack.
The extended and alternate scenes, line-o-rama, Dale vs Brennan, music video and Prestige Worldwide presentation are all essentially deleted scenes, split into many categories. Given that Step Brothers is a comedy film with lots of improvisation, the deleted scenes are huge amounts of fun. They're exactly what you want on the DVD.
Yes, they really have done the commentary in the form of a musical. Unless it really tickles your fancy, I wouldn't suggest sitting all the way through it. There are a couple of chuckles, and kudos to them for doing something a bit different, but it's not funny enough to make it a must-listen.
The Making Of featurette is standard fare, but adds an extra level of understanding. It's a perfect addition to the disc. The Music of Step Brothers is another similar featurette, focussing (unsurprisingly) on the music. It's unexpectedly fascinating. I thought the score of the film largely passed me by – I just accepted it was there. Having seen how it was created, I developed a much greater appreciation of it, and realised just how much actually had seeped into my consciousness. Any extra that can do that is hugely impressive. This is an excellent DVD package.
