Tekkonkinkreet

Tekkonkinkreet looks absolutely stunning. The detailed animation is crisp, clear and bright. The audio quality is perfect too, with the surround sound used to great effect throughout the film. It's completely immersive and adds to the overall enjoyment. Subtitling is all present and correct.

The original Japanese soundtrack is available, as well as English and German dubs. As much as I hate dubbing usually, Tekkonkinkreet's dub is about as good as you could hope. Purists will rightly stick to the original, but the quality of the dub is still commendable.

The commentary with director Michael Arias, writer Anthony Weintraub and sound designer Mitch Osias is a joy to listen to. The three of them have plenty to share about the film's production and the group dynamic works well to ensure the pace and interest is maintained throughout.

Slightly less interesting is the discussion between Arias and Plaid, the band responsible for the soundtrack. It's a fairly standard interview, and whilst it's better included on the DVD than not, it doesn't offer anything particularly memorable or fascinating.

The Making Of documentary is much better, and gives a real feel for the all the hard work that went into producing such an engaging film. As is so often the case with animated films, the making of documentaries tend to be more interesting than those of live-action films because the production process is less familiar to the viewer. It's very informative, and is well worth watching and rewatching.

A fantastic package and fantastic presentation. Highly recommended.
