The Chronicles Of Riddick: Director's Cut

The 2.40 anamorphic widescreen picture is virtually perfect with crystal clear sharpness and loads of detail to the brilliant CGI. You'll have to look real close to find anything remotely resembling tarnish on this transfer.

The Dolby 5.1 soundtrack provides a typically loud and complex experience for a film such as this. Surrounds are pretty much constant and Graeme Revell's above average score blends nicely into the sound field. It's a shame Universal didn't put a DTS track onto this one. The .1 LFE channel gets a heavy workout, too.

The commentary is not all that great. They talk about the look of the movie and re-shoots, but never anything in-depth about the universe of Riddick. There are a lot of silent moments and too often David Twohy speaks what is on his mind, whether or not it is interesting to the listener. A commentary bursting with cool stories this is not.

Deleted Scenes offer a few more minutes of alternate takes in extra scenes. Some are quite slow and it's easy to see why they were taken out. I'm also glad they cut the scene where Toombs is killed - probably because they wanted to bring him back again. But since this flopped, I doubt they'll need to. Nothing of great interest is lost in these scenes.
