The Emperor's New Groove

DVD Rating: ****

The anamorphically enhanced 1.66:1 picture is windowboxed and perfect in all areas. Colors are beautiful and well rendered and there are no problems whatsoever save the occasional, but minor and not bothersome, pixelation. A picture worth every penny.

The Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1 soundtracks are not up to standards of live action movies. This is a comedy and mainly chat between Spade and Goodman, so dialogue is more abundant than sound effects. The dialogue is clear and the surrounds really only come into use during John Denney's score. But this is still a soundtrack that will excite younger audiences.

The commentary by Mark Dindal and Randy Fulmer is better than most. It includes some of the animators who explain what their contributions were to the film and details of how the film progressed from basic idea to completed production.

There is also a game and a music video on the first disc.

On the second disc, there is a large broken-up documentary where you can access and study every area of production in chronological order. The menus for this are a little hard to operate and the documentary itself is a tad childish. Like it did with Snow White, the Disney Corp has shown what to do with DVD and has put a lot of effort into this release. If only other studios would take a hint and try to match it.
