The Glass Menagerie

If you're considering buying the DVD, it is probably because you want this version of the play - and this is a good thing. But don't expect any fluffy extras to go with it. The cutest thing on offer is a rather sweet apology before the play starts, asking you to forgive the poor quality of the film stock.

The quality is poor, the colours lack depth and there is obviously scratching, but you can't say they didn't warn you. Once the great acting starts, you won't notice anyway. The sound, too, suffers from age, although the music by John Barry is good, so you'll probably forgive them.

By way of additional material, there are very comprehensive biographies of the cast and Tennessee Williams, which are certainly worth a look. The only other "extra" is subtitles, which are on the small side, so if you need them be prepared to get cosy with your telly.
