Read Jeff Robson's film review of The Great Ecstasy Of Robert CarmichaelThe quality of the film transfer is excellent, with Arvanitis’ washed-out greys and greens as stunning as on the big screen. Set-up options include Dolby Digital 2.0, Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround and DTS Digital Surround 5.1.
The chapter navigation is clear and easy and the 20-minute documentary gives an interesting insight into Thomas Clay’s earlier career and his collaboration with Lang. He comes across as an obviously intelligent and committed filmmaker, which makes me regret the lack of a commentary, as it might well have illuminated what he was trying to achieve.
There’s also the theatrical trailer, which does admittedly pack a punch and has a list of festival awards and critical recommendations which proves that not everyone agrees with me.
But it loses a star for having plot spoilers in the documentary. I know I’m not the only one who watches the ‘bonus features’ as a starter before the main course of the film itself. So please, production companies, remember to keep a bit of the mystery intact.
