Eye For Film >> Movies >> The Hurt Locker (2008) DVD Review
Given that The Hurt Locker is a good film, featuring some of the best performances of 2009, it's a shame a bit more cash hasn't been spent to bolster the extras on this disc.
What is here is standard electronic press kit fare, which skates over the surface of the film and the making of it, without really examining either the motivations for writing it or the way in which it was shot in any detail.
The Behind The Scenes runs at 11 minutes, and around a third of that is made up of clips from the film. Director Kathryn Bigelow, the cast and writer Mark Boal offer opinions on the story and characters but this is mainly gloss with little substance.
The same can be said for the, exceptionally brief, interviews with Anthony Mackie (Sanborn), Brian Geraghty (Eldridge), David Morse (Thompson), Guy Peaerce (Reed) and Jeremy Renner (James). Renner proves the most interesting, and is willing to be drawn into some political comments regarding war, but these are extras at their very cheapest. The tech specs for the package are all fine, but it is also disappointing to note that although the main features are subtitled, the extras are not. All in all, the package amounts to little more than a damp squib.
