The Legend Of Bagger Vance

The picture quality is perfect. This may not seem such a big deal, now that standards of reproduction have improved so dramatically, but with a movie such as this, where the look of the thing is vital to an understanding of the period, not to mention golf courses, it makes a huge difference.

Robert Redford's Insight Featurette is a bit of a con. It's not a featurette, but a voice-over. You don't even see the man himself, you just hear him. On the plus side, what he says is interesting. He talks of the importance of mythology and making something uplifting in these cynical times. "I see sport as a metaphor, particularly golf, where your opponent is really yourself."

The Making Of doc is very short. The actors talk about their roles, which always looks like a PR set-up - who is going to say that the director's drunk by noon, or their part sucks? - and the behind-the-scenes snippets don't add to much, except that Redford treats everyone with respect, which is no surprise.

As an added bonus, there is a trailer of Butch Cassidy And The Sundance Kid and it's great to see Redford and Newman in their prime. Also, it includes the immortal line, spoken by Butch: "Who IS that guy?"

But this is Bagger Vance and The Kid is behind the camera now.
