Read Robert Munro's film review of The Legend Of Barney ThomsonRobert Carlyle proves to be a personable companion on the commentary track which is the main extra on this DVD. He talks about the various actors involved and offers details on some of the key Glasgow locations for the film but the main thrust of his observations are concerned with the cinematography of the film.
He pays considerable tribute to his cinematographer Fabian Wagner as he talks about his pursuit of symmetry throughout the film and the way of using 'empty' space to create the impression of a split-screen. "I wanted it to be simple, old fashioned," he says. His observations are thorough and thoughtful with some bright spots of humour generally involving anecdotes about working with Emma Thompson, who plays his mum Cemolina in the film. "That landed, by the way," he says as she fetches him a clout towards the end of the film. "My ear was rinign for an hour afterwards."
The rest of the extras here are scant filler items, five deleted scenes most of which last less than a minute - notably, Carlyle talks about others which aren't included here - a blooper reel, which comprises the outtakes seen over the credits plus a handful of others and a trailer.
Hard of Hearing subtitles (of the film, not the commentary) and an audio descriptive track are also included.
