The Merry Gentleman

The warmth and reserve that can be found in the film extend to the small but engaging extras on this disc. The transfer is as fine as one can expect from such an indie offering and, refreshingly, both the film and the Making Of featurette are fully subtitled.

The 15-minute Making Of The Merry Gentleman has a good behind-the-scenes footage to talking heads ratio. There's plenty of Michael Keaton on the set, which is just as well since both he and co-star Kelly Macdonald are conspicuous by their absence in the 'interview' department. Still, there is more than enough here to give a feel for the film and writer Ron Lazeretti and the producers offer some decent background in the development of the project. It's nice to see one or two scenes, in particular, being shot and then be able to see how they turned out in the final cut - particularly a pivotal moment in a church. That said, the inclusion of both that and one of the film's final moments mean this is strictly for watching after you've seen the feature.

The package is topped and tailed by a trailer reel and a trailer for the film (again, not recommended before watching the movie itself). A shame they couldn't have tempted Keaton on board for the extras, but this is a pleasing, if lightweight package nonetheless.
