The Red And The White

Accompanying the feature is a documentary by Miklos Jancso, entitled Message Of Stones - Budapest, a fascinating, if somewhat perplexing piece, focusing on the religious and social life of Jews in the city. In one scene we see venerable old men convening with a rabbi, while in another, we are taken through a school fair, as children buy cakes and run around. Adjoining the scenes are beautiful, sweeping shots of the city from rooftops and the air, and the overall result is an intriguing snapshot of life in a culture and a city, even if the slightly disturbing flute player is an artificial intrusion.

The DVD comes with a booklet, featuring an interview with the director, but it's a shame that it was conducted by an idiot, who asks inane questions, such as, "I understand that you're half-Romanian, half-Hungarian?"
