Scottish Screen to spread wings

Agency heralds 'new era' in TV and new media

by Amber Wilkinson

A "new era" concentrating not just on film is the future being promised for Scottish Screen, the national agency commonly viewed as being mostly about film and film training.

Last night, the agency's Celia Stevenson said Scottish Screen was about more than film and film production, that the 'screen' in its title could also include TV and new media.

And under new chief executive, Ken Hay, a radical overhaul is on the cards.

Speaking at an event on funding support for creative companies in Edinburgh - organised by Scottish Enterprise-backed Creative Edinburgh and locations outfit, Edinburgh Film Focus - Stevenson said Hay was "tearing us apart and shaping us around" ahead of an unveiling of a new-look Scottish Screen, probably at the end of next month.

Stevenson was enthusiastic about the future of the organisation under Hay, who has been touring Scotland to sound out opinion about Scottish Screen and is in Dundee, on just such a mission, next week.

According to allmediascotland.com's Spike the agency, which has an annual budget from the Lottery of £3.3 million, is also likely to be slimmed down under Hay's plans.
