Almodovar critics' favourite in San Sebastian

FIPRESCI award Spanish film-maker on opening night of festival.

by Amber Wilkinson

Spanish film director Pedro Almodovar has been awarded a critics' prize for his latest movie Volver.

Almodovar scooped the FIPRESCI gong for his film starring Penelope Cruz, about a dead woman who returns home to offer comfort to her daughters.

This is the third award for the film so far this year, as it also picked up the best screenplay and best actress award (given to the ensemble cast of Penelope Cruz, Carmen Maura, Lola Duenas, Blanca Portillo, Yohana Cobo and Chus Lampreave) at Cannes.

The 54-year-old was selected by more than 350 members of the International Federation of Film Critics to receive the award.
