Sunshine glows in LA

by Amber Wilkinson

Indie hit Little Miss Sunshine won the best feature award at the Independent Spirit Awards last night.

The ensemble comedy about a trip to a beauty pageant - which stars Toni Colette, Alan Arkin, Greg Kinnear, Steve Carrell, Paul Dano and Abigail Breslin - also scooped the gongs for best director (Valerie Faris and Jonathan Dayton), best first screenplay (Michael Arndt) and best supporting male (Alan Arkin).

Other winners including Ryan Gosling - who walked off with the best male lead for his role in Half Nelson, for which he has also scored an Oscar nod - and Jason Reitman - awarded best screenplay for Thank You For Smoking.

The winner for Best First Feature went to the 1920s set Sweet Land, which marks the first time in the history of the Spirit Awards that a film without a distributor has won this prize.
