Actress Helen Mirren has been nominated for three Golden Globes.
The veteran British star will compete against herself for the best mini series actress award, thanks to roles in Prime Suspect: The Final Act and Elizabeth I, and also vyes against fellow Brits Kate Winslet and Judi Dench for the best film actress gong.
The Queen is also in the running for best motion picture drama, best director (for Stephen Frears) and best screenplay (for Peter Morgan).
It has been a good year for the British and Irish at the awards - which celebrate film and television as well as hosting separate categories for drama and comedy or musicals.
Peter O'Toole has a best actor nomination for his role alongside fellow veteran Leslie Phillips in comedy drama Venus, while in comedy or musical best acting category, Sacha Baron Cohen and Chiwetel Ejiofor are both up for the prize, for Borat and Kinky Boots respectively.
Netting the most nominations, however, was Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu's Babel. Known for his multi-layered plots (Amores Perros, 21 Grams) Babel is in a similar vein, tracking four stories across three countries.
The film has picked up nods for best motion picture, best director, best actress (with nominations for Adriana Barraza and Rinko Kikuchi), best actor (for Brad Pitt), best screenplay (for Guillermo Arriaga) and best original score (for Gustavo Santaolalla).
Also nominated for multiple awards was Martin Scorcese's The Departed - in the running for best drama motion picture drama, best drama actor (Leonardo DiCaprio), supporting actor (for both Mark Wahlberg and Jack Nicholson), best screenplay (William Monahan) and best director.
Little Children also faired well. In addition to its nomination for Winslet, it is also in the running for best drama picture and best screenplay (for Todd Filed and Tom Perrotta).
This year also sees the introduction of a new category for best animated feature, with Cars, Happy Feet and Monster House all aiming for the top.
Several big-screen names are also competing in the television segment of the awards, including Toni Colette and Chiwetel Ejiofor - for their roles in BBC/HBO collaboration Tsunami, The Aftermath - Jeremy Irons (Elizabeth I), Thomas Hayden Church (Broken Trail), Bill Nighy (Gideon's Daughter) and Ben Kingsley and Annette Bening for fact-based drama Mrs Harris.
The winners will be announced at a ceremony in LA on January 15.
