Oscar-winning director Anthony Minghella has died at age 54.

He suffered a fatal heamorrhage early on Tuesday morning after a routine neck operation last week.

The director, who began his film career with Truly Madly Deeply, went on to Oscar success with The English Patient, which won nine Academy Awards. He was made a CBE in 2001.

His TV adaptation of The No.1 Ladies Detective Agency - co-scripted by Richard Curtis - is due to screen on the BBC this Easter. His latest project, New York, I Love You is currently in production.
