Jarman Award shortlist announced

Second year of art award continues to celebrate innovation and the moving image.

The shortlisted artists for this year's Jarman Award have been announced.

Launched in 2008 - when it was won by Luke Fowler - the Jarman Award gives recognition and support to artists working with the moving image and whose work, like Jarman's, resists conventional definition, encompassing innovation and excellence.

The 2009 shortlisted artists are: Anja Kirschner & David Panos - partners who the jury say "combine art and activism"; Simon Martin - praised by the jury for his "witty and ironic narratives; Lindsay Seers - branded a "complex storyteller" by jurors; and Stephen Sutcliffe, whose work is described as "small but perfectly formed".

Work by the shortlisted artists will be showcased in a short tour calling at the CCA (Glasgow), Picture This (Bristol) and Whitechapel Gallery (London), with the winner announced at a high profile special event at the Whitechapel Gallery on 22 September.
