Insect festival to include special screenings

Your chance to get a sneak peek at The Vanishing Of The Bees.

by Jennie Kermode

There's going to be quite a buzz going on in London over the next few days as concerned citizens and honey-lovers alike attend Pestival, a series of special events celebrating insects - especially the honeybee. From special science lectures to a bee cab touring the city, there'll be lots going on, and on Saturday that includes a special preview of The Vanishing Of The Bees (out on general release in October). This documentary explores the mysterious collapse of bee colonies, now thought to be caused by a virus. It's been said that if bees died out, humans wouldn't last much longer. This is a fascinating chance to see how we're interconnected.

For bee fans who like B-movies, the following night sees a rare screening of The Hellstrom Chronicle, a cult tale about insect superiority (Bill Bailey fans will already have heard the warnings). Both films will be screening in the Southbank Centre.
