Toronto Film Festival award winners announced

Precious is the people's choice.

The Toronto Film Festival award winners were announced today, with Lee Daniels' Precious: Based On The Novel Push By Sapphire winning the coveted People's Choice gong. "I made this film for every person out there who ever looked in the mirror and felt unsure about the person looking back," said the director in reference to a story that chronicles the struggles of an abused black teenager in Harlem. The film was produced by Oprah Winfrey and stars Gabourey Sidibe. It is due to be released in the UK in February.Runners up were Mao's Last Dancer and Micmacs.

In the documentary, The Topp Twins beat stiff competition from Michael Moore's Capitalism: A Love Story, whilst the Midnight Madness award went to The Loved Ones with Daybreakers in second place.
