Raindance Film Festival announces winners

Feature debut Down Terrace named best UK feature.

by Amber Wilkinson

Down Terrace has won the award for best UK feature at the 17th Raindance Film Festival.

The film is the debut feature from erstwhile TV director Ben Wheatley (Ideal, The Wrong Door) and is described as a "kitchen sink slasher film".

The award for best international feature was shared by Spanish crime thriller 25 Carat, directed by Patxi Amezcua and US dramedy My Suicide, helmed by David Lee Miller.

A Normal Life Please, directed by Tokachi Tsuchiya - which looks at the plight of working conditions for many in Japan - was named best documentary.

The highly-touted ultra-low budget horror film Colin - seems almost overqualified for its best micro budget gong when you consider it was shot for just £45.

Among the other winners was Redland - a Depression era drama directed by Asiel Norton.

The short film awards went to George Milton's comic parable Infidel (best UK short), Irish film Of Best Intentions, directed by Brian Durin (best international short) and Paolo Sorrentino's The Slow Game (Film Of The Festival).

The Festival closed last night, with a screening of Steven Soderbergh's The Girlfriend Experience and was reporting a phenomenal year, with box office receipts up 83.4 per cent on 2008.
