Turkish delights

The Turkish Film Festival opens in London.

by Jennie Kermode

Opening tonight with the UK premiere of Atalay TaÅŸdiken's The Bogeyman, the 15th annual London Turkish Film Festival looks set to be something special. It will feature the award-winning Men On The Bridge, which takes a curious look at life along the Bosphorus, and the highly acclaimed love story Wrong Rosary, which won this year's Tiger Award in Rotterdam.

"The film festival provides a great platform to showcase the best of new Turkish cinema in London," said festival director Vedide Kaymak, who is celebrating the establishment of a new digital distribution contract that will lead to one of the festival films getting a general cinematic release across the UK. The programme includes musings on traditional themes, experimental features, incisive documentaries and a rich, varied platform of shorts.

The festival will also celebrate the life and cinematic achievements of actress Türkan Soray, whose 50 year career has encompassed almost 200 films.

The London Turkish Film Festival will run until the 19th with films screening at the Apollo Piccadilly Circus and the Rio on Kingsland High Street. Look out for reviews appearing here at Eye For Film over the next two weeks.
